LETTER: Slide into ever closer union

But as indicated by Toby Brothers in his letter (May 26), the UK has suffered a big loss of influence in recent years and will suffer further, as more new countries join.

Against that EU officials continue to pursue their agenda, which is to eliminate the sovereignty of nation states, as they have made clear.

For example, Herman Van Rompuy is on record as saying ‘The era of the nation state is over’ and ‘The EU intends ultimately to control every country on the Western Flank of Russia. If the public doesn’t want it then we do it anyway.’

More recently President Juncker is on record as saying that ‘There can be no democratic choice against the European Treaties.’

That is all consistent with this 1939 quote from Lord Lothian, posted proudly on the walls of the ‘museum’ adjacent to the EU complex in Brussels: ‘National sovereignty is the root cause of the most crying evils of our time…’.

So EU officials are intent on the eradication of national sovereignty, reducing our Parliament to the status of a local council.

Sadly we cannot stop them (without legally binding reform) because they have stacked all of the chips in their favour.

For example, the Lisbon Treaty gave them the power to change treaties incrementally, without the need for a new treaty, or full parliamentary and public scrutiny.

Also the ECJ (European Court of Justice) uses EU Regulations and the ECHR, to rule on decisions made in Parliament, or in UK courts.

Furthermore unelected EU officials (not MEPs) have a monopoly to propose compulsory EU Regulations and can initiate changes to whatever has been agreed. Over 2,000 have been passed each year for some years and few have been repealed. Also UK MEPs have been outvoted many times on EU proposals.

EU officials abandoned Article 125 (no bailouts) demanding £850m UK bailout money - after agreeing that we should not contribute to bailouts.

But we are now asked to vote on (non-binding) political ‘agreements’ knowing that the EU may abandon those too, if it suits them.

Since we do not have enough ‘influence’ to divert EU officials from their purpose, we can only arrest our slide into ever closer political union by leaving the EU.

Only then will we be able once again, to make laws and trade agreements in our own Parliament, with MPs accountable to us.
