LETTER: Keeping dogs under control

I write to remind all dog owners who walk their dogs on public footpaths that they are expected to respect the farmers and their livestock.

Recently there have been cases of people walking dogs off leads among sheep and cattle and causing mayhem, stress and in some cases death to farm animals.

Recently I stopped someone with three dogs roaming fields next to sheep, when asked to put the dogs on leads and keep to the footpath I was told they didn’t have leads! How irresponsible is that?

I have put up signs requesting dogs be kept under control among livestock but they have been ignored.

Last week one of my neighbours had a three month old lamb which had been chased and mauled by dogs, it was just about alive, deeply stressed, and a week on it still cannot stand to feed.

This is not just a problem for West Sussex but throughout the country. Farming is under pressure as never before. A farm is a workplace, I would not dream of walking with a dog through anyone’s office or garden the way some dog walkers are doing at the moment.
