They have lost just one this season and followed up Saturday’s abandonment at home to Cuckfield with a seven-wicket win over the Sussex Development XI.

It has been a period of transition for the Lions over the past couple of seasons after title pushes in the years previous. But Johnson, who is in his first full season as skipper, is pleased to see happy cricketers and good results going hand in hand early in the season.

He said: “The club is in a very good place at the moment, it seems to be in high spirits. That is the main thing I wanted to achieve really and if everyone is in high spirits, they will play good cricket.

“Everyone is really happy at the moment and we are only going to get stronger as well when player availability improves.

“It’s obviously very pleasing to be top, but it is early days. It is nice to have the Sussex fixture early on in the season.

“We have never had it this early before. We are normally waiting for it towards the middle of the season, by then we are already chasing the league. This has got us up there already, although it is early days. We’ll just take every game as it comes.”
