Horsham climbed to the top of the Premier Division as they bowled over the Sussex Development XI on Sunday.

They eased to a seven-wicket win thanks to a fine display by their frontline bowlers and solid batting displays from Joe Ludlow (62) and the returning George Garton (41*) against his employers.

Having won the toss Sussex opted to bat and posted 143 all out in the 40th over. Tom Haynes top-scored with 30, with Delray Rawlins (27) and Joseph Gilligan (23) the other main contributors.

In Horsham’s attack, Jofra Archer claimed 3-45, backed up by Aidan Chase (2-33) and Michael Munday (4-45).

In reply, Ludlow and Gallagher (30) put on 39 for the first wicket, while after a couple of cheap dismissals, Garton guided them home with 146-3 in 32.1 overs.

Horsham captain James Johnson said: “We played very well and bowled really well. One thing pleasing me at the moment is that due to availability, we are having to play a different side every week.

“Everyone is stepping in and doing a really good job. Aidan Chase, for example, no disrespect to him, but he has never been anywhere near the first team, but we have given him a couple of National Cup games and he had a number of good performances for the second team. He came in and bowled really well, kept it tight and tied up an end and was rewarded with wickets.

“Joe Ludlow carried on where he left off really and George Garton batted really well. He played responsible, fantastic cricket, he has come on again from last year and although he still loves a whack, he batted a lot more responsibly. “I think the old Horsham side would have wobbled chasing 123, so it was pleasing we knocked it off.”
