Conducting in Kenya

CONDUCTOR Damian Penfold, originally from Billingshurst, won national recognition in Kenya this month.

Mr Penfold conducted the Nairobi Orchestra in a sold-out concert on Sunday November 13.

He told the County Times: “This was my fifth series of concerts with the orchestra and the concert on Sunday was sold out with people needing to be turned away.

“The orchestra has been steadily improving over the years I have been working with them and I have also seen an increasing number of local players remaining with the orchestra, whereas in the past it was made up largely of expatriates on postings to the embassies or NGOs based in Nairobi.”

During his visit to Kenya, Mr Penfold was a guest on live national radio, was interviewed for concert sponsor Virgin Atlantic, was featured in Kenyan national newspaper The Star, and gave conducting classes to students.
