Horsham cartoonist inks deal as an '˜honorary historian'

James Mellor was sworn in recently by Master of the Guild, Lee Robertson at a special event at Bakers’ Hall, London, in front of some of the city’s most respected and successful entrepreneurs.

As the first person to be appointed to the position, James will be responsible for chronicling the Guild’s history, research a report on its formation and notable figures, document its latest developments and contribute to its application for a grant of arms.

He said: “I am honoured to be appointed to this role. The Guild of Entrepreneurs may not be the oldest of London’s guilds and liveries, but it is a part of a long and rich tradition that excites the historian in me.

“Taking on the role of honorary historian is really a dream come true and I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to the members for giving me the opportunity to tell the Guild’s story.”

His appointment should come as no surprise for those who know him, after a diverse career in the history sector over the past decade. James’ connection with the Guild of Entrepreneurs began in 2017 when he was commissioned to produce some cartoons celebrating the history of All Hallows by the Tower, a church affiliated to the Guild.

Born in Horsham and a graduate in history at the University of York, James regularly illustrates historical and political cartoons and has published a series of history books.
