Sophisticated festive fun will be delivered when All That Malarkey return to Chichester with a show entitled Camp as Christmas! on Monday, December 21 at 7.30pm at St John’s Chapel, St John’s Street.
Piano accompanist and director David George Harrington said: “All That Malarkey is a charmingly-sophisticated, funny and energetic group made up of four talented singers who have been performing all over the UK for the last three years since graduating together from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff.
“We specialise in performing original classical interpretations of famous songs from literally every genre – mash-ups, medleys and ballads – often combining pop, comedy, r’n’b and opera. Our goal is to make classical singing more accessible and to introduce all audiences to a huge range of different music styles through clever arrangements, slick choreography and boundless fun on stage! The group started when we were all studying at the music college in Cardiff and we were all looking to do something a bit different. It turned out we all shared a common interest in singing music you wouldn’t normally associate with the operatic tradition, and the next thing you know, we were singing Bonnie Tyler and Abba songs in elaborate four-part harmony!
“A few industry contacts began taking notice and we’ve been developing the product ever since. An All That Malarkey show takes the best elements of a cabaret-style evening and blends it with a night of quality singing and musical performance. Our shows are renowned for leaving audiences laughing, beaming and thoroughly entertained. There’s always a bit of chat with the audience, a huge variety of songs, sketches and, of course, ‘bonkers behaviour’ – a phrase affectionately used to describe our shows by reviewers!
“I arrange the music, the singers work exceptionally hard to learn it all, I lead rehearsals (I’m a nice MD – they get lunch breaks from time to time), we all help choreograph the show and then we perform to our fabulous audiences. We often see people of all ages coming to see our show. There just seems to be something that translates to all tastes, musical and theatrical.
“We’ve had some amazing opportunities in the last few years. We loved performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival when we were just emerging as a professional group. It was brilliant being part of something so huge and exclusively focused on the arts. We’ve performed at some beautiful venues including St Paul’s Covent Garden, Goodwood House, Leadenhall Market, Cardiff Castle and BBC Hoddinott Hall to name just a few. It was incredible performing at the Wales Millennium Centre and also being served an enormous banquet after a private gig in Leeds Castle, Kent in one of Henry VIII’s grand halls!”
David added: “Our very earliest performances were in the wonderful city of Chichester. One of our sopranos, Amy Fuller, was born and bred in Chichester, and we have had heaps of support from friends and family there. Local legend and director Roger Redfarn was responsible for much of our success when he discovered us at a charity event supporting the Aldingbourne Trust back in 2013.”
