Magnificent wooden works on display at Horsham Museum

We often take the craftsmen for granted, but now a new craft gallery display at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum aims to showcase their talents.

Going with the Grain runs from Friday, July 22.

Visitors can appreciate some stunning pieces in wood. Through the skills of three craftsmen, the grainy contrasting patterns usually hidden by the tree are exposed in all their magnificence. Living material is transformed into exotic bowls, multi-layered strata-like layers morph into organic formed wall hangings, and furniture celebrates rather than hides the fascinating grain.

Horsham Museum is a unique monument to wood and provides a rich backdrop to a display of the same.

Visit this exhibition and be astounded by the complex and intricate patterns of the bowls or sculptural designs by John Plater, who uses ‘defects’ such as burrs, whorls and staining to great effect. Be transfixed by the work of Paul Baden who creates wooden lattice structures or figurines, by expertly layering different woods to create patterns like contours on a map. And be inspired by Colin Norgate’s fabulous furniture and household pieces – as decorative as they are functional.
