Kate Bush tribute artist brings dream concert to Horsham's Capitol

But she’s also determined to maintain, in parallel, her career as a Kate Bush tribute artist.

She will be bringing her Dreaming of Kate show to The Capitol, Horsham on Saturday, March 12.

“I was doing a couple of Kate Bush songs, and people loved them so much that they started saying I should do more. I happened to look a bit like her, and I can dance, and really it all just grew into something bigger. Really to sound like her doesn’t take an awful lot of effort on my part.”

Part of the attraction, Maaike says, is that Kate is “so bonkers”, as indeed she says she is herself too: “I love her lyrics that have such weird stories behind them. I don’t like every-day lyrics. Her lyrics are great stories, and with so much story-telling there is also a great sense of irony and a great sense of humour. That’s a very big attraction. She is so superb in every way from performance to composition, from lyrics to… just everything really!

“And yes, I did see her last year (when Kate Bush performed a string of concerts for the first time in decades). It was amazing, again just everything about it. She was so theatrical. I knew that she was going to be theatrical, but she was just so theatrical. Everything was so thought through, and musically, it was just brilliant. Her only tour ever was in 1979, and now she was doing these concerts. I don’t think she will do anything like that again. She just wanted to do it one more time, and then I think that will be it. But I was looking at her and thinking maybe I could use this or use that.

“I was designing the current set at the same time as she was preparing for her show. There was a lot of secrecy around her shows, around what she was going to be doing. But I wanted to do something different. I just knew she wouldn’t be doing her early hits and the earlier stuff. Her voice is different now.”

Maaike is currently living in Liverpool: “I moved to Liverpool about a year and a half ago, and I love it. I really do. I think it is a great big warm welcoming city. People don’t think that about Liverpool, but it really is. It is a great place to be. I really love the people there. They are really friendly and open.”
