“We formed about four years ago in 2012,” Andrew recalls. “It started off as a workshop, and then the people that turned up were very keen to do another workshop, and at the end of the second workshop, we put on an informal concert where we ran through all the things we had done. Really it just escalated from there! The whole thing has gone from strength to strength.

“We have got very, very good amateurs. A lot of the members sing with other choirs, and they come from all around Sussex. We have got about 60-65 on our books, but we are hoping to have about 50 or so for the concert. It’s impressive to have come so far so quickly.

“I am a professional singer, a soloist, but choirs are an interest I have always had, being brought up in Wales and being taken to male-voice choir rehearsals with my father and having sung in mixed-voice choirs. It has always been a passion for me to start a choir, where I can apply everything I have learnt, working with very good amateurs but trying to keep that same professionalism. Our rehearsals are quite concentrated and very focused. People are quite tired by the end of them!

“The enjoyment for the members of the choir is that they are learning to make a really good sound and they are learning to listen to each other. We have explored all kinds of genres in terms of music, from Rachmaninov’s Vespers and Mozart’s Requiem to My Fair Lady and Sister Act. We are crossing all the genres, introducing different approaches, different asks, different needs. It takes a lot of discipline to be able to switch from one style to the next.

“It is important to get singers to listen to each other and to blend. Also the quality of the production of the sound is most important to me. I work a lot on the way that they produce the sound.”
