West Chilt rained off at Rye with game evenly poised

West Chiltington & Thakeham made the long journey to Rye for their first ever league game in East Sussex last Saturday and like virtually all other Sussex games, the match was rain-affected.

After being asked to bat by their hosts, the visitors made a creditable 185-9 off their 53 overs with one rain interruption.

After being reduced to 86-4, Tim van Noort made 42 and former Pulborough player Ed Killner also caught the eye making a useful 48 on debut.

The wickets were shared around in the Rye attack as Gary Willis took 2-56, Harry Smeed claimed 2-43 and Fin Thomas finished with 2-24.

In reply, with the game even poised as Rye had reached 109-3 in the 34th over, a thunderstorm and more rain brought proceedings to a premature end.

Batsman Mark Cook was unbeaten on 57, while James Hamilton had scored 36.

West Chilt captain Tim Monday followed up a useful 38 with the bat with 2-34, while Charlie Davies took 1-24.

Chilt’s second overseas player arrives this week - Sanchit Batra is a wicketkeeping batsman and with no player yet making a half century in their first XI, he is eagerly anticipated.

Chilt remains one of five clubs in Division 4 yet to win a game as they entertain Henfield on Saturday.
