GYMNASTS from the Southwater-based Infinity club are celebrating their first ever medal winning performances.
The two year old club entered Charlotte Wright, Rebecca Waller and Bethany Mason into the Acrobatic Gymnastics Inter-Regional Qualifier in Hastings on Sunday, and after just six months of training for competition, the trio came away with a silver medal.
Acrobatic gymnastics is a discipline where gymnasts perform individual and acrobatic elements in a partnership or group.
Delighted head coach Kirstine Dawson said: “We were not expecting them to medal. They were competing against clubs with purpose built facilities while we have been training on school mats, it is a big achievement for us.”
The club, which has been training at Millais School in recent months due to a lack of availability at Southwater Leisure Centre, only started training in the acrobatic discipline six months ago, with the aim of competing a year later. But the students’ progress took the coaches by surprise, and it was agreed they were ready to compete.
“They improved much quicker than we could have imagined,” Kirstine added. “We wanted to give them as much time as possible before competing, but making them wait another six months would not have been beneficial. Now they all know what is possible it has made training so much better.”
