Nostalgia: The boys who threw custard pies at actor

It was also the year Rick Astley released Never Gonna Give You Up – though some would argue it was not really released but allowed to escape.

Over in Battersea, four Horsham lads were hurling Tiswas-style custard pies at celebrities.

Eight-year-old James McKelvey was joined by Tristan Coulter, Andrew Isbister and James Ware, all aged seven, as they bombarded the likes of Richard Briers, Roy Castle, Paula Wilcox and James Hunt.

The event was part of Roy Castle’s Top Performers Appeal which raised money for several charities and was televised live on the BBC’s Saturday Superstore – the one with Mike Read, Keith Chegwin and Posh Paws the dinosaur.

James and co managed to raise around £200 and the lad proved himself to be the flan flinging champion when he managed to hurl the most pies at the celebrities in one minute.

A modest chap, James told the County Times: “I just threw and hoped for the best.”
