Young Ross Waumsley has been crowned the youngest British Model Powerboat World Champion.
The Horsham 16-year-old took gold in the 15cc Junior category after qualifying fourth for his final at the championships in Dessau, Germany, against the pick of other juniors from across the world, including Frabce, Germany and China.
After two 20 minute qualification heats, Ross worked his way from eighth at the start quickly back up to fourth in the final and then moved to third, second and finally took the lead which he held to the end.
Not to be totally outdone, Ross’ dad Julian also competed in Dessau, but after reaching the senior 7.5cc final, crashed out of contention.
Ross has been racing model power boats since he was eight, and moved into Multiracing, which is the most popular form of the sport and can lead to exciting races between the 12 competitiors. At the end of a heat the boat which has completed the most laps is declared the winner.
Julian said: “I’m extremely proud, it makes all the hard work worthwhile.”
