Paul Carter made light of using just three clubs and a putter to win the Mannings Heath Seniors’ Christmas Cup with 39 stableford points.

The 22 handicapper was run close by Ian Gibson, playing off 12, who finished just one point adrift.

Third prize, with 35 points went to a guest, ladies’ captain Joy Reineck, who edged Ian Geale into fourth place on countback, while octogenarian Ron Barber took the over-75 honours with 34.

There were also team prizes at stake with each group of four counting their best three scores on each hole. Harvey Jones, Roger Key, Gordon Taylor and John Aldridge top scored with 110 points, just one better than the Dave Cocker, David Gibbs, Bob Hooper, Jim Sullivan quartet and two clear of Mike Dimon, John Hastings, Ian Gibson and Peter Worthington.

The Ladies’ team event earlier in the week saw the best two of three scores counting over thirteen holes. Lynne Jones, Joyce Watson and Sandra Forsyth won on countback from Barbara Warburton, Pat Griffiths and Linda Davies after both trios carded 54 points while Judith Brown, Gill Redston and Lesley-Anne Collins-Powell signed for 52.

Five-handicap Ali Crunden dropped three shots in his first four holes in the junior stableford on Kingfisher but went on to finish four over par for 37 points. Luke Bennett took runner-up spot on countback from Gregor Macintosh with 35.
