THE MARTLETS Short Mat Bowls Club are within touching distance of retaining the West Sussex County League Division 1 title.

With one game to play, Billingshurst-based Martlets are five points clear of second placed Chanctonbury Foxes after a 4-2 win against their championship rivals. Both teams won a rink each but the visiting Martlets side edged the shots difference, and gained the two bonus points.

Andy Clarke, Ian Younger, Jack Rollings and Mel Lillywhite lost 15-25 to Steve Payne’s Foxes rink after a game that included four killed ends, and lasted for three and a half hours.

However, the other Martlets rink of Chris Blackman, Malcolm Rollings (capt), Chris Rolph and Marc Lancaster dominated their 21 end match, and emerged 31-7 victors over Foxes’ captain, Keith Hawkins.
