HORSHAM Hockey club have earned a shot a promotion to Division 1 of the National Indoor League.

A second place finish in the National League Division 2 tournament at the weekend in Croydon was enough to cement their Division 2 Status for next year, and it means they can still qualify for Division 1 with success next weekend.

Steph Dent’s side won three of their five games, finishing in second behind hockey powerhouse East Grinstead, and will contest a place in Division 1 at Moulton College, Northampton on the weekend of January 22 and 23.

An opening 4-4 draw against Maidstone was followed by a 4-1 loss to East Grinstead. So on day two of the tournament, only wins would do. Horsham thrashed Harrow 4-0, beat Cambridge City 5-2 5-2 and saw off St Albans in a seven goal thriller.

Captain Dent said: “The whole team played fantastically, it was a great team effort, especially on the Sunday when we had a reduced squad. After a draw and a loss on the Saturday, the team realised that we had to win all three games on Sunday and we all put in 110 per cent. Our keeper Alison Playle was outstanding in goal through out the entire tournament and make several superb saves, including one off her helmet!”
