Horsham athletes finish season in battling style

Horsham Blue Star Harriers’ womens’ team wrapped up a fourth place finish in the Southern League at Exeter on Saturday.

Although short on numbers, every athlete covered a maximum number of events to ensure the Blue Stars also finished fourth on the day, edging out host club, Newquay & Par, by just eight points.

Kate Kaye and Frances Parkes teamed up in the 400m hurdles, 400m and 800m, with Frances taking second place in the 400m hurdles in 69.1seconds and Kate winning the B event in 75.9s. The 800m saw Kate in fourth place in the A string (2minutes 35.5seconds) and Frances winning the B string in 2m25.2s. Frances took second in the A string 400m in 62.3s with Kate third in the B event in 66.9s.

Kate also took second place in the 3000m in 10m45.0s and then turned her hand to the triple jump with a 8.12m jump for fourth. Frances had earlier taken third in the B string long jump with 4.26m.

Jade Brewster, resting from her normal pole vault exploits, had her first ever run over 300m hurdles and took second place in 49.5s, she than ran a personal best 28.5s to take another runner up spot in the B string 200m.

Sophie Spinner was close to her best times in taking third place in the A string 100m (12.7s) and a fourth place in the A string 200m (27.0s). Sophie with Emily Cox contested the shot putt where throws of 7.28m and 7.83m saw them take fifth and sixth places respectively.

Catriona Dunlop jumped 4.55m in the long jump and took fourth place in the triple jump with a leap of 10.12m. Amicia Lee, in her first outing for the club this season, finished fifth in the 1500m (5m39.1s) and then took fourth place in the B string high jump.

Even team managers Lindsay Cox and Kim Milnthorpe were pressed into action, with Lindsay taking fourth place in the javelin (18.05m), with Kim fifth in the B event.

Although only three juniors made the trip to the West Country they all performed well. Caroline Wirth and Emma Garry teamed up in the discus with Caroline throwing a personal best 24.45m to take fourth place in the A event and Emma winning the B event with a throw of 23.66m. These two also teamed up in the long jump with Caroline jumping 4.25m for fifth in the A event and Emma taking third place in the B event with 4.04m. Caroline also ran 13.8s for the 100m and Emma threw 8.08m, a personal best, for fifth place in the shot.

The other junior competing was Lucy Milnthorpe who won the high jump with an excellent clearance of 1.45m and then took third place in the javelin with a throw of 18.93m and a fifth place in the 75m hurdles in 12.9s.

The final two relay events saw the 4x100m team of Emily Cox, Frances Parkes, Catriona Dunlop and Sophie Spinner finish in fifth place in 53.6s and the 4x400m team of Frances Parkes, Jade Brewster, Amicia Lee and Kate Kaye finish in an excellent third place in 4m30.3s.

The final match result was 1 Reading 373pts, 2 Guildford & Godalming 326, 3 Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow 319, 4 Horsham Blue Star 207, 5 Newquay & Par 199, 6 Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets 180, 7 South London Harriers 175.
