HORSHAM swimmer Cameron Lambourne is tantalisingly close to earning a swim in the pool being used at the London Olympics.

This year’s British Championships are being held at the Olympic Park’s aquatics centre ahead of the Games starting in July, and swimming at Portsmouth’s Mounbatten Centre ahead of the ASA Southern Zonal Championships, Atlantis Swimming Club member Cameron came within half a second of qualifying for the 50m freestyle. He and Bex Lobley also dipped under the National Qualifying Time for the national finals to be held in Sheffield for a second time, while Jade Stocker and Kate Windle are tantalisingly close to setting a qualifying time.

Meanwhile at Brighton SC’s Tom Handley Meet, Atlantis swimmers, based at Horsham’s Pavilions in the Park, were hoping for times which would earn a place in the Sussex County Championships.

Possibly the stand out performance came from Beth Britton, who won the ‘skins’ race over 50m. The slowest swimmer is eliminated after each round, and Beth controlled the final to take the prize with a superb final length.

The final summed up a great weekend of top quality swimming with many achieving their personal goals.

Head coach Bill Penney said: “The swimmers have once again shown their fighting spirit. “With the likes of Lauren Pedel gaining regional times, let alone County times we are really satisfied.”
