Bowls round-up: Strong finish as Horsham sign off with three wins

Horsham Bowling Club finished their outdoor season on a high with three wins from four last week.

An 11 shot win at Haywards Heath, in which Alan Fisher, Lesley Grogan and Mick Norris took top rink (+16) was soon followed by a heavy defeat of Ewhurst. Fran Baillie, Mike Parr and Robbie Calder were top rink by 33 shots. At Southwater, Jean Meinertzhagen, Margaret Dunsbee, Gill Jeffcoate and skip Ray Davis led the way for the home side as Southwater won by 11 shots - Horsham’s best rink was Maggie Straughan, Dave Gosling and Arch Redwood.

Horsham then beat Henfield by 25 shots. Dennis Tribe, Beryl Watson, Dave Marden and Ken Holloway were top rink.

Southwater’s Michael Skipp, Jill Webb and skip Tony Male (+7) led the way in a win against Hurstpierpoint, and although Beryl Simmons, Derek Wilson, Jean Meinertzhagen and skip Don Puttock were the solitary success against Shoreham By Sea, they recovered to beat Horsham Park with +17 from Tony Woodard, David Nesbitt, Lila Dawes and skip Joy Reynolds. Park’s best effort came from Ros Medland, Ben Field and David Peters +19. Further wins against Cranleigh and Downsman saw Alan Baker, Geoff Kentish and skip Heather Grant +10, and David Nesbitt, Michael Allmond and skip Lila Dawes finish +11.

Horsham Park were beaten by 26 shots at Lindfield, where David Peters, Angela Spurr, Brian Milner and Mike Simmons took 17 off the last two ends, before a narrow 71-67 defeat of Southgate Park. Brenda Thompson, Angela Spurr, David Rowe and Mike Westgarth were top rink. Against Felbridge, Ian Holmes, Dawn Howarth, Alan Langford and Robin Peters were the only winners, 20-11.

Billingshurst could not recover from a slow start against Maltravers, losing by ten shots, despite a +10 win for June Bennett, Roy Lawrence and Bill Monckton. Hurst were whitewashed by Crawley Town, Brian Richards, Paul Wickens and Geoff Weller lost by just a shot, before Hurst suffered a narrow one shot loss to Burgess Hill. Hazel Sandford, Chris Laker and Barry Gilbert (+16) were top rink.
