Last-gasp goal denies Town the perfect weekend

Steyning Town picked up four points from their two games over the Bank Holiday Weekend but they were left disappointed it was not a maximum six after suffering last-gasp heartache.

Town picked up their first victory of the season with a 4-2 win against Saltdean at the Shooting Field on Saturday thanks largely to hat-trick hero Adam Burton.

The frontman put Town ahead in the 17th minute with a looping header, only to see it cancelled out by Dean Ghamsari on the half hour. Burton struck again four minutes after the break before completing his hat-trick with another neat finish on 55 minutes.

Murat Aslan added a fourth from a Burton cross 12 minutes later to killed the visitors off, although they did manage to add a second consolation on 63 minutes from Ebou Jallow.

Burton was again on target two days later as Steyning stormed into a 3-0 first-half lead away at Mile Oak, strike partner Phil Williamson also on target. But Town allowed their hosts back into the game with goals from Aaron Ransom and Paul Eaton, who then netted an equaliser with the last kick of the game.

Assistant manager Tom Gurney said: “If you’d offered us four points from the two games beforehand, we would have taken it but we are still very disappointed because of the nature of the Mile Oak result.”
