Jolyon to resume GP2 championship chase at Monaco

The 23-year-old from Southwater has finished on the podium in each of the four GP2 races held so far, including a victory in race two at Bahrain and two second places last time out in Barcelona.

He lies 22 points clear of nearest rival Julian Leal in his bid to become the first British GP2 champion since F1 star Lewis Hamilton in 2006.

“I can’t wait for Monaco, it’s the standout venue on the calendar and the most enjoyable track to drive,” Jolyon said.

“I’ve been quick there in the past and won my first GP2 race there in 2012. Qualifying will be crucial as overtaking is extremely difficult.”

And he added: “It’s been a great start to the season for us and I hope to keep that up at Monaco.”

Monaco poses a unique challenge for the drivers, with little in the way of run off areas and Armco barriers lining the track.

But Jolyon excels on street circuits, scoring his first ever GP2 win in the principality in 2012, and thrived on the streets of Singapore last year with a pole position and a win in the Feature Race.

Meanwhile Jolyon’s younger brother Will Palmer enjoyed an excellent day at Brands Hatch for Round Two of the BRDC Formula 4 Championship, taking a podium in the first race of the weekend.

Will made a good start in race one and managed to fend off George Russell at Druids on the opening lap to hold third place behind Maini and Hyman.

The Cranleigh schoolboy then held position for the remainder of the race, keeping the leaders in sight the whole way to grab a third place finish.

Speaking afterwards, Will said: “It’s been a great day for me, qualifying third and holding that place to take my first podium of the season.”

In the other two races Will finished sixth and eighth and is fifth overall in the early championship standings.
