Hornets fail to build on strong start as Redhill come from behind to snatch a late winner

A Tony Nwachukwu penalty put the Hornets ahead after only two minutes, but they failed to build on their strong start and a disastrous Glen Woodburn own goal drew the hosts level before sub Matt Robinson snatched a late winner.

The visiting Hornets could hardly have enjoyed a better start when a typically jinking run from Billy Dunn saw him beat two players before being upended by Sean Kelly inside the area, and Nwachukwu confidently dispatched the spot kick.

Dunn curled a free kick just wide but Redhill were gifted a way back into the match on 22 minutes, when a mix-up at the back saw defender Woodburn nod a harmless cross over his goalkeeper Michael Hunter.

Dunn was looking bright and another powerful run saw him nearly beat home keeper Max Hunter with a low shot.

Woodburn’s evening then got worse as he was forced to depart with a groin injury to be replaced by Tom Graves.

The lively Dunn then went close again after latching onto a throw-in, though the half ended with Sam Robinson’s free kick nearly catching out Hornets stopper Hunter.

Redhill’s gradual improvement at the end of the first half meant the match had become much more even.

Kevant Sebony shot wide from the edge of the box for the hosts after the restart before Nwachukwu went closer at the other end, his shot coming back off the far post.

It was the hosts by now making all the running as Horsham struggled for possession, Barney Abbott going close with a header from a corner.

Hornets sub Akwasi Fobi-Edusei nearly made an immediate impact but he was denied by Hunter’s block.

It proved a crucial save as, five minutes later when the visitors failed to clear a corner Rob Hill picked out Robinson to head home unmarked.
