Hatchett and Sturmer on song as Grinstead skittle Roffey

Sussex's Lewis Hatchett did the damage as Roffey suffered a shock ten-wicket defeat at the hands of East Grinstead on Saturday.

The reigning Premier Division champions were on the end of a heavy home defeat as seamer Hatchett picked up 6-26, backed up by Ian Sturmer’s 4-27.

That skittled the hosts out for just 52 after they had lost the toss and been asked to bat.

Hatchett had Josh Fleming and Australian Liam Gibson out with the first two balls of the match, before bowling Chris Webb with the final ball of the first over to leave Roffey 0-3.

Theo Rivers managed to add 19 and Rohit Jagota hit 23, but with three more ducks down the order they were all out in 22 overs.

In reply in drying conditions, Grinstead made light work of the chase as Will Adkin (45) and Alex Evans (11) brought them home with 56-0 inside of ten overs.

The result propels East Grinstead, who finished runners-up last season, just four points behind, up to fifth, a place above Roffey.

Roffey captain Matt Davies said: “Lewis bowled well in the conditions, the ball was swinging quite a bit, but we should have done better.

“It wasn’t good enough to be honest. We were all in a bit of shock, I don’t think anyone expected us to be bowled out for such a low total.

“I am still not really sure what happened, we did not play half as well as we can. It was a mixture of good bowling and bad decisions from us.

“We knew we had to try and take a couple of wickets to get a couple of points under our belts, but we dropped a couple of chances in the field, all-round it was a dreadful day.”

On whether, they were unlucky to face Hatchett, Davies added: “We will face good bowling all season, so you cannot blame that too much, a lack of application cost us dearly.”
