Seven-handicap Rhodri Marsden won the Captain’s Day Cup with 40 points while Andy Wakefield pipped Ray Page on countback for the runner-up honours with 39. The team prize was claimed by Steve Wright, Gerry Wyatt, Chris Fernie and Nigel Greenwood.

Head professional Neil Darnell raised £380 with his ‘beat the pro’ challenge on the short 10th hole and Steve Wild raised a further f400 by subjecting himself to a triple dousing of ice and water. Coupled with the traditional post-golf auction their efforts raised over £3000 for Steve’s chosen charity, Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance.

The day was the highlight of a busy week which began on Wednesday with a record entry of 107 taking part in the Seniors’ Open. The top four finishers all carded 40 points, Chris Morgan of Haywards Heath just getting the countback verdict from home member Nigel Billingham, Tilgate’s Robert Nichols and Peter Danton of Chartham Park.

Thursday saw the Ladies stage their annual competition to select the pair who will represent them in next year’s Daily Maily Foursomes. Rosemary Martin and Mina Burton claimed the honour with 34 points, three clear of Pat Etheridge and Susan Jaggard and four ahead of Marion Gibson and Gerry Wyatt.

Sunday’s Junior Club Championship was won by a recent recruit from Ifield, Louis Harrison, whose excellent nett 69 off five beat George Atkinson by three and Josh Brown by four. And on Monday twenty-one handicap Mark Watts earned the Seniors’ Ian Galloway Trophy on countback from John Hastings after both carded impressive nett 67s with Ray Battersby a shot behind in third place and left ruing two closing double bogeys.
