The 82 players who teed off as 21 teams in a shotgun start made the most of a rare rain-free morning and the fine scoring was testimony to the quality of the Waterfall greens despite their recent soakings.

Second place with eight birdies for a nett 57.2 were Mark and Will Thomas, Martin Lumbard and Mike Coombs with Cormac Whelan, Graham Hill, Neil Russell and Ben Perry beating their birdie count by one but finishing 0.7 behind them after deducting ten per cent of their combined handicaps.

Steve Wild, Kenny Thorpe, Geoff Lodge and Nigel King took fourth spot with 58.6.

Proceedings were rounded off by a convivial Christmas lunch with £620 being raised on the day for captain John Gleaves’s chosen charity, Cardiac Arrest in the Young (CRY).

The weather was much less pleasant for the ladies’ fun competition on Thursday in which only points gained on odd or even holes counted.

Not all the starters made it to the last green but Tricia Robson battled through bravely for 18 points to beat Pat Etheridge by three in the silver division with Margaret Edwards’ 11 points the best of the bronze returns.
