The Bears suffered narrow 2-1 defeat in the semi-final against division’s rivals Newhaven at a wet and blustery Culver Road on Tuesday night.

The Dockers edged to victory in the last-four clash through a second-half winner by Lee Robinson after a fiercely-competed first half.

Heath led after just two minutes as Stuart Chester slotted home, but a Joe Dryer stunner midway through the half evened things up.

And as the rain fell at the Sussex FA headquarters in the second half, it was Newhaven who won through to face either Lancing or Chichester City.

Whiting said: “It was a close game and always going to be small margins that made a difference. The wind was difficult for both teams and there were difficult conditions. I thought we gave as good as we got, but it did not quite break for us. Both teams tried to play football well in the conditions.

“There were half chances and once they equalised, it could have gone either way. Their goal was a stunner, but it was great for us to start so well with the early goal. After their second goal we got back into it well, but it wouldn’t break for us in their box.

“It’s always disappointing to lose in a semi-final when you are so close, but we went on a good run. We must keep pushing on in our other cup competitions and we have plenty left to play for this season.

“It would have been good to make the final, but good luck to Newhaven, they will do well in the final whoever they play.”
