Watford were 4-0 down to Huddersfield on the last day of the 2013-14 Championship season, when Josh Doherty was substituted on in the 80th minute for Cristian Battocchio.

The Hornets won a penalty in added-time, which Troy Deeney scored to take his goal-count for the season up to 25 in all competitions, despite Doherty’s attempt to take the penalty himself.

Speaking to Laura Woods on talkSPORT, Deeney told the story: “It was a young boy, called Josh Doherty. He made his debut against Huddersfield on the last game of the season and we were 4-0 down. I ended up scoring but (the penalty) would’ve been my 25th goal of the season in the last game, and he was like ‘I’ll take it!’”

Unimpressed by Doherty’s cheek, Deeney wasn’t feeling generous with his personal milestone in reach: “I just gave him the look as if to say ‘get back up there’. He’s a left-back as well, that was the worst part about it!”

Since then, Doherty has had brief spells at Leyton Orient, Altrincham and Ards, before settling at Crawley, where he is now a regular, having made over 75 appearances for the club.
