Suter: ‘Unbelievable’ run of rained off games taking its toll on Steyning Town

Town’s last game was January 18, when they won 3-2 away to Seaford but, prior to that, they had not played since a 2-2 draw at home to Oakwood on December 14.

This weekend’s scheduled match at Bexhill is already in doubt owing to more bad weather forecast, so February 22 is looking like the earliest date that they will play again.

Town, alongside Oakwood and Saltdean, have played the least number of games in County League Division 2, with just 17 of their 32 fixtures complete.

Some sides have completed as many as 22, and The Shooting Field boss Suter is expecting a busy climax to the campaign.

But despite that Town, who currently sit seventh, will be chasing a top three finish in the closing months.

And Suter isn’t worried about the backlog.

He said: “We have had one game since December 14, since then we have had just one single game, unbelievable.

“The reserves have played one game in that time and the rain on Tuesday has probably wiped out our pitch at Steyning on Saturday where they have a game, but even then there is more forecast rain for Friday and Saturday, so I can’t see the reserves being on.

“We are meant to be at The Polegrove and that can be a wet pitch as it’s low-lying, so it could well be another week with no game.

“That could then be February 22 and still that will have got question marks on it. “We have nowhere to train this week, the pitch is too wet, we cannot get a sports hall and we cannot get a 3G or Astroturf.”

Suter has also revealed that the recent weather has prompted the club to think about the long-term aim of installing a 3G surface.

He added: “Steyning does have the long-term aim of a 3G or 4G surface, it’s an ambition a lot of clubs have.”
