Storrington bring to an end neighbours Steyning’s fine run

Town assistant manager Tom Gurney admitted his side were not at their best as a late flurry of goals saw Swans emerge 4-2 winners.

Steyning took the lead after just 11 minutes as a Storrington defender hooked a cross into his own net, before Joe Warner levelled things on 25 minutes, stabbing home after Steyning failed to clear.

Adam Burton headed Town ahead on 72 minutes, although six minutes later the hosts were level again as Tom Pickford nodded home a corner.

Then came the turning point as late substitute Will Conway fired a superb free kick into the top corner from 25 yards with three minutes left, and, as Town pushed for an equaliser, they were caught on the break as Warner notched his second.

Gurney said: “It was one of those games, really. It was really even and when it was 2-2 either side could have won it.

“They brought on their best player from when we played them earlier in the season and he put one in the top corner from 25 yards. That was the difference and they hit us again on the break as we were piling forward to try to get something.

“I’m not saying Storrington didn’t deserve it, but 4-2 was a bit flattering. We did not play to the high standards we have set recently, though.”

Town are away to Midhurst on Saturday, entertain Wick on Tuesday evening and host Oakwood on Thursday.
