Steyning Town boss Richard Whittington hailed his side’s team spirit and persistence as they continued their assault towards the top half of the table with victory over Wick on Tuesday.

Captain Alex Gathern’s first-half strike put Town ahead as they controlled the majority of the opening 45 minutes, while Adam Burton wrapped up the points late on, despite a few scares from the visitors.

Whittington said: “We worked hard, stuck at the task and got our rewards in the end. To win 2-0 and get a clean sheet is pleasing and we’ve got another tough game on Thursday now.

“The second goal was a long-time coming, but we have a good bunch of lads here. They all work hard for each other and have a good team spirit and it’s working dividends.”

Steyning have lost only one of their last ten Division 2 fixtures, their best run of form for around a decade which has fired them up to tenth in the table.

“We want to finish as high as we can now, we’ll take each game as it comes,” Whittington said. “I don’t think we have finished higher than eighth for over 20 years. So eighth would be a massive accomplishment, but top-half would be great.”
