Steyning stun Dockers in cup shoot-out

The Steyning Town bandwagon marched on last night after they dramatically knocked league leaders Newhaven out of the Division 2 Cup on penalties.

Goalkeeper Matt Evans was Town’s hero, saving one penalty in extra-time to keep his side in the tie and then pulling off two more stops in the shoot-out.

After a goalless 90 minutes Lee Robinson fired the Dockers ahead at the start of extra-time, and things looked bad for Town when the visitors were awarded a penalty.

Evans though pulled of a super double save and then tossed the ball out to Craig Knowles, who broke and saw a shot saved, but following up Adam Burton tapped home to force penalties.

Two more Evans saves and successful spot kicks from Adam Burton, Knowles, Kerry Parsons and Kristian Harding with the decider gave Steyning a memorable 4-2 penalty win.

In-form Steyning have now won five games on the bounce and a delighted assistant manager Tom Gurney beamed: “The scenes after the final penalty were really mental with everyone celebrating.”

Steyning: Evans; Mills, Gathern, Hourigan, Parsons; Page, McMahon, Knowles, Harris; Burton, Williamson. Subs: Aslan (Page 65), Harding (Williamson 80), Clark (McMahon 105).

Elsewhere Loxwood continued their good recent league form with a 1-1 draw away at Littlehampton, Matt Dingle with the visitors’ equaliser on 77 minutes.
