Roffey eye up promotion places

Having not played for nearly two months, his team have won twice in a week and are now looking for a push toward promotion.

On Saturday they beat top of the table Ifield 4-3 away and then followed that up on Tuesday night with a comfortable 3-0 win Division 3 Cup win against Hurstpierpoint, using Storrington’s ground as their own does not have floodlights.

Miller said: “Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to Storrington for hiring us their ground.

“Winning these games keeps us on track to get promoted.

“It was good to play again after such a long time and I must admit at one point it looked like we wouldn’t play again this season.

“Saturday’s game against was a fantastic win as they were top and had been playing some games while we hadn’t played since January 11.

“Their pitch was bobbly and was untouched since they last played on it two weeks earlier. It was very difficult conditions.

“We are now making a start on the ground improvements needed to allow us to play in Division 2 if we go up.”

After taking an early 12th minute lead through Damon Aston, fifth-placed Roffey recovered from 3-1 down to beat Ifield on their own pitch. the result lifted them into third spot, just three points behind Ifield who are now second.

Asa Pearson scored a second half hat-trick to pull off the superb win.

On Tuesday Roffey booked themselves a place in the Division 3 Cup quarter-final when they beat Hurstpierpoint 3-0.

They got off to the perfect start when in only the second minute Ben Bissett laid on a chance which Michael Spence put away off the underside of the crossbar.

Ross Hirschfield extended their lead two minutes into the second half when he headed home Paul White’s delivery from a corner.

Roffey got up a good head of steam and might well have won by more if not for three good saves by the Hurstpiierpoint keeper to deny Pearson, Ross Hirschfield and Grant Miller.

Ben Bissett rounded off the win with a third goal after 65 minutes which he confidently netted from the penalty spot, sending the stopper the wrong way after their centre half had brought down the rampaging Pearson in the box.

Miller added: “Either two or three teams usually go up - we don’t know if third will be enough so we are eying up second spot and haven’t given up on winning the league! We have eight league matches to go, six of which are at home while leaders Langley Wanderers have more away games left. We are raring to go.”

Roffey continue their league campaign at home to Sidlesham on Saturday, kick-off 2pm.
