But Yems believes his side - on the back of a 4-0 demolition of then League Two leaders Morecambe - can compete with them when they visit the Peninsula Stadium on Saturday.

He said: “We can compete [against Salford]. Money doesn’t buy you success but it does help. I have learnt in all my years in the game it’s about players.

“You get the players and organise them then you are in the lap of the gods. But you have me and Lee in there who know people.

“It’s all about relationships with people in football and it’s good to see people are sticking by us and think we are doing a decent job.

“We’re not good enough to rest on our laurels, which we won’t, and we don’t have the money to buy instant success.”

Tony Craig believes Salford will be a good test for the Reds. He said: "The budget they have got is unbelievable for this league. It’s a great test for us.

"The away form last season wasn’t good enough and I am telling you now that won’t happen when I am here. We have to get results on the board and to be successful you have to have good away form."

Yems' side lost 2-1 to Exeter in midweek but one man who will look to carry on his form is new signing Max Watters - who has scored four goals in his first three games for the club.

He came on against the Shrimps on Saturday because of an injury to Ashley Nadesan and scored two and started against the Grecians and gave Crawley the lead.

But he is not guaranteed a place in the starting line-up.

Yems said: “He’s part of the squad. We have a squad, we don’t have a first team. If people are are not fit or get injured we want everybody ready to come in and play in the squad.

“He’s been great. We got him out of the non-league. He’s done really well when he’s come in but so has everyone else.

"It was only because Nadders got injured that he got in.

“He’s great around the place, he’s a great trainer. He took his chance and he deserved it. Now he’s got to keep doing it every time he plays.

“I keep saying to people we are trying to improve all the time. It’s the only way you move forward. Hopefully it makes all the other lads step up. It’s good.”
