Matthews took charge of Swans last summer and admits it was a tough task to walk away.

Storrington finished fourth in Southern Combination League Division last season and they were in the promotion hunt all season, finishing just two points behind third-placed Oakwood.

After handing in his notice, Matthews admits the only reason behind his resignation was an increased workload.

Matthews is a joint partner in the recently re-opened Arun Sports Arena and his full focus is being put into that at present.

He said: “It was with great reluctance that I decided to step down. It’s been a tricky few months for me with the opening of the Arun Sports Arena.

“My full focus is on that at present and I just felt it was not possible for me to return to Storrington for the new season as well.

“I’m certain that if this had not come up I would have stayed but business has to come first for me.”

Following his departure, Matthews is hopeful the vast majority of last season’s squad will remain with Storrington.

He said: “There was a view of someone taking on a brief role while I found my feet but I just didn’t think that would have been right for me or the club.

“Hopefully they can keep the vast majority of the team together and, with a couple of fresh faces, I think they could do well next season.”

Storrington chairman Nigel Dyer admits it was a decision noone at the club wanted.

He said: “It’s a real shame to see Pete go, He did a really good job here last season and the hope was to build on that.

“We’ve been in contact and it was not a decision neither the club or he wanted to make but he has other commitments and that has to come first.”
