YM boss Peter Buckland is standing by his claim that anything other than a top six finish would be a failure.
Buckland made the comment at the end of last season having kept the club up on the final day.
YM currently sit 11th in Division 1 of the Sussex County League, 11 points off third placed Rye Utd.
Still the club hasn’t given up hope, applying for promotion to Step Four along with just two other clubs, believed to be Redhill and Lancing.
“I’m sticking to the fact that we want to finish in the top six,” Buckland said. “We have applied for the Ryman League and from my point of view there’s still no reason why we can’t achieve promotion. But we’ve been terribly inconsistent and we need to change that.”
Ten games unbeaten had YM in the hunt but that was followed by three straight league defeats. Their last league game, an 8-0 thrashing of AFC Uckfield showed what the side is capable of, but that was followed by a Sussex Senior Cup loss to Loxwood.
YM’s game at Hassocks on Saturday was rained off with the rest of the County League schedule but next up is the Boxing Day home clash with Dorking Wanderers. Buckland was one of the founding members of Dorking and took the club through the West Sussex Football League before leaving in 2005. He said: “Obviously there’s a bit of interest in the game because of my connections there and I’m looking forward to it.”
