PULBOROUGH RUFC are reaping the benefits of a new emphasis on fitness as they pull away at the top of Sussex Division 1.
Saturday’s 31-13 derby defeat of Holbrook cemented their position at the of the table, with a nine point lead over East Grinstead II. And Pulborough’s fitness played a part, as there were only two points in it at half time.
Coach Phil Jennings said bad memories have spurred Pulborough on to be fitter than the opposition.
“Last year we came up against Uckfield who destroyed us in the last few minutes of their game,” he said. “We really said to ourselves then that we would have to be fitter to compete and break a team down. Everyone has bought into it. If you only have two or three players on your team who are unfit, it can let you down.
“In training we push everybody right until the end of the session. We run six lengths of the pitch at the end - it does not sound like much but at the end of a training session it is. And it does pay off, it’s that bit extra to keep you going. It will be interesting to see how we do over the Christmas period, hopefully the guys can keep their levels up.”
