The annual Faygate 6-a-side football tournament has been cancelled for the first time in its 25 year history because of the recent bad weather.
The tournament, due to take place on Saturday July 21 and Sunday July 22, is traditionally one of the biggest and best attended youth and adult tournaments in the area.
But with fears over safety following weeks of heavy rain organisers have been forced to pull the plug on this year’s tournament.
A spokesperson from the clubs said: “It is with deep regret that we have to announce that we are left with no option but to cancel this year’s tournament owing to the Briitsh weather.
“This decision has not been an easy one to take as we having been running this tournament for around 25 years and have never had to cancel before.
“The fact is that with all the unprecedented rain we have had in recent months and the forecast of heavy daily rain also through into next week has made car parking impossible for us, as the intended
field is already under water in parts, but frustratingly the playing surfaced is playable.”
Organisers said any money already paid out by teams would be refunded.
