And, YM had a goal disallowed and were very disappointed not to be awarded a second half penalty, which might have led to them pressing for a share of the points.

A nucleus of senior YM players have moved on, giving opportunities to emerging talent, who deserved praise for the effort put in from start to finish, Assistant Manager Lee Maguire telling the County Times: “We matched them throughout the 90 minutes, but although our young squad didn’t have quite enough in the locker to stretch our more experienced opponents, they learned a lot out there this evening and will take that on board as we carry forward.”

YM began brightly, Adrian Todd having a shot on goal in the opening exchanges – just off target - before YM had a free kick on the right and earned two corners. Yet, Horley went ahead in the tenth minute when their corner was impressively headed in by Jack Poplett. YM, though, soon equalised with the goal of the match when debutant Charlie Gee unleashed an unstoppable free kick into the top right of the net

However, five minutes later Adam Grant tapped into an open goal to restore the visitors’ lead. YM immediately responded with a second goal of their own, only to have it disallowed for an infringement on the Horley keeper. YM’s new Captain – goalkeeper Aaron Jeal promptly pulled off a reaction save and a battery of Horley corners were safely negotiated ahead of YM’s Charlie Maguire just failing to make contact with a spectacular diving header.

Beginning the second half 2-1 down, YM had an early corner, then Jeal ran out to execute a brave save, but in frantic goal mouth action, he could only parry another strike and when the ball came back across the goal, former Broadbridge Heath’s Ryan Brackpool was on hand to put Horley further in front.

Todd fired to the Horley keeper from close range and, with spirited YM giving it their best another excellent Gee free kick found the side netting. But, mid way through the half a firm cross gave Grant his second goal. YM were now 4-1 adrift, but to their credit, kept pressing and thought they had a chance to reduce the deficit, but a seemingly certain penalty was not given, despite vociferous appeals. The game ended after two outstanding Jeal saves prevented further damage with Horley forwards seeking to take advantage of some generous space
