It became obvious early on the weathered pitch was not conducive to pretty football, but despite this Heath started stronger and on six minutes Jamal Sultan played a ball inside to Michael Wood, who fired a right-footed in from the edge of the area.

Jake Holmes was a fraction away from doubling the lead two minutes later, and Andy Waddingham then headed a Danny Attwater corner off the post.

The hosts, however drew level when Heath appeals for offside were ignored by the linesman and Idridris Adedoja made the most of a ball over the top to score, and in the closing minutes of the half Wickers would have scored a second but for Attwater’s clearance off the line.

In a scrappy second half Grant Miller hit a volley from distance not far wide before the winning goal arrived on 74 minutes; Sultan crossed for Wood, and though his shot was saved by the legs of the Southwick keeper Holmes pounced for his 26th league goal to guarantee Heath a top six finish.

One more game to complete Heath’s season - the Sussex County Football Association RUR Cup Final against Division One high-flyers East Preston on May 7 at 7:30pm at Culver Road, Lancing.

Heath: Fisher, Etherington, Swaine, Attwater, Waddington, Sultan (Whiting 80), Drinkwater, Woods, Miller (Chester 70), Holmes, Bolaji.
