HORSHAM’s hopes of reaching the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup ended with a 2-1 defeat at home to Ryman Premier club Thurrock.
A change of tactic to play Gary Charman in a striking role nearly paid off with two good chances in the opening exchanges, one narrowly missing the post from the left and another flying close from the edge of the area.
In fact the Hornets talisman, celebrating his 511th appearance was the inspiration behind most that was good from the home side in the first half.
However Thurrock took the lead in the 37th minute when a long ball from the right side of midfield was hoofed up into the area and Fola Orinolishe who was left unchallenged to score with a simple finish from 12 yards.
A dour second half was brought to life on 72 minutes with Thurrock’s second goal. A long ball through the middle found Charlie Stimson, who rounded the advancing keeper Michael Hunter and comfortably place the ball in the net.
Horsham threatened in the last 20 minutes through Billy Medlock and Ian Varley but it was Charman who scored a consolation goal in the 94th minute when he was in the perfect position to tap-in an initial attempt by Medlock.
However it was too little too late to affect the result as Horsham bowed out of the famous competition.
