Dockers ferry the points as YM left '˜frustrated' in a gale

Horsham YMCA manager Peter Buckland felt his side deserved at least a point in their sails from a blustery afternoon at Newhaven.

An 80th-minute winner from Ryan Walton gave the Dockers all three points as both sides competed in a gale in the harbour-based ground.

Buckland felt they edged the game on chances, but was left frustrated as his side failed to find the net.

He said: “We should not have lost, we were a bit better in terms of having clear-cut chances and certainly should have come away with something.

“They were awful conditions for both sides. The pitch is always a bit bobbly, but it was blowing an absolute gale as it is right on the coast with the ferries 25 yards away.

“It wasn’t even blowing one way, just horrendously all over the place. I wouldn’t want to watch the highlights. But we played pretty well and just not scored, having missed some good chances.

“I do not recall them having a shot on target until the goal - but I can’t have any complaints with that. I do think it just highlights the season I have had.”

The visiting manager bemoaned a number of missed chances including a spurned one-on-one by Phil Johnson, a good opportunity for Sam Schaaf and Dave Brown missing an open goal from six yards.

After weathering a YM storm in the second half, Newhaven stepped into a higher gear and dominated the play for a good 25 minutes, but with YM breaking down any threat.

The pressure continued and the breakthrough finally came in the 80th minute as Mark Fox parried an effort before Walton pounced.

YM were missing Dean Carden, Ash Dugdale, Martin Smith and Charlie Cooke on Saturday and that injury-list will be added to by the absence of Nick Sullivan and Dave Brown for this weekend’s visit of Eastbourne Town.

Horsham YMCA: Fox, Evans, Gilbert, Harding, Shipton (Buchanan 85), Johnson, Cave, Curtis (Jeal 90), Brown (Gedling 66), Schaaf, Sullivan.
