Reds did not include striker Izale McLeod in the squad because of illness.

There is speculation Crawley’s topscorer last season who still has a year’s contract is about to be sold to Coventry City.

The hosts included former Premier League striker Marlon Harewood in their starting line-up.

Yates said: “It was a good win, a good performance in patches. It was completely different from Monday night. I changed a lot of the team to give gametime.

“One or two of them who didn’t start the game on Monday night did really well and staked a big claim which was really good.

“They got some really good players and one or two of them caused us problems.

“It’s a clean sheet and a win and another performance towards playing Oxford United at the start of the season.

“I feel like we’ve come a long way. We are far from the finished article. There was loads I wanted to improve on tonight. We went 4-4-2 just to see if we could do it.
