Crawley Town’s Hancox off the mark to set-up home win

Mitch Hancox was surprised to score his first senior goal which paved the way for Crawley’s shock win against Leyton Orient.

The Birmingham City loanee was key in clinching the three points for the first time at home this season.

He said: “I was a bit surprised to be honest, I didn’t know how to celebrate and I just put my hands in the air!

“I was delighted. I whipped the corner and when the corner came out I had a good touch and saw the opening so I just went for it.

“They came out in the second half it was a sloppy goal we conceded. We dug deep as a team and defended well and it was good to get a home win.

“At Plymouth we were unlucky there and in the changing room I felt confident we were going to get the three points.

“We’ve got to take that and get another home win when we play Luton at home again and get another three points.

“Now we have got the first home win we can go out and feel more free and hopefully play well.

“It’s been a long time coming - the first two games I could have been better in my first two games of men’s football but since then I’ve played better.

“Crawley’s a quality club and everything is quite good about it. I’m enjoying myself here. I would like to get some games, do my best for the team and help us climb the league.

“When I was a scholar at Birmingham I scored 14 goals but I was playing left-back/left-midfield but that was about four years ago and I’d forgotten what it was like to score. It was a surprise to me and I put my arms in the air just out of shock!

“Today I was taking the set-pieces and if I can help set-up goals I will be pleased as well.

“A big part of my game is about helping the attack, getting balls in the box and trying to get goals.”

Hancox agreed with the referee’s controversial decision to send-off Alan Dunne for a foul on Rhys Murphy.

He said: “I played the ball to Rhys and he went down and as far as I could see it was a penalty and a sending-off.”
