Last week he signed former Stevenage central defender Jon Ashton who was his fifth new recruit of the summer.

Former Spurs and Southampton striker Lee Barnard has been in pre-season training with the Reds for two weeks trying to earn himself a deal.

Yates said: “We are exploring every avenue and have plenty of options.

“We are looking at a couple of loans. We know we need a couple of keepers and a couple of full-backs.

“We’re not rushing and won’t be pushed into a hasty decision.”

Yates will be looking at some trialists during their pre-season friendlies - they will include former Wales U19s international keeper Callum Preston, released from Birmingham City and another keeper who will be revealed this week when they begin their pre-season campaign at Ryman League Division 1 South champions Burgess Hill Town tonight (7.30pm) and this Saturday when they host Championship side Fulham.

Yates added: “We’re looking forward to going to Burgess Hill - they got a good result against Northampton (0-0).

“We have two teams who will play 45 minutes each to get some game time.”
