Major work had been done to the stadium’s drainage in the summer of 2014 following a series of postponements over the winter which had given Reds an unenviable record nationally.

Dunford said: “On Saturday we had an unbelievable amount of rain. Compliments to the ground staff.

“I thought the playing surface against Cambridge held up well and I think this vindicated the decision to spend a considerable amount of money.

“We now have a quality surface and can be confident of getting games on for fans to enjoy.”

Manager Mark Yates is still looking to add to the squad but at the time of going to press there was no-one on the verge of signing.

Dunford said: “Mark is working on two or three different options but as we speak I do not think there will be anyone coming before this Saturday’s home game against Notts County.”

Last Saturday, Yates signed a new player on the morning of the match, George Smith, 19, on a month’s loan from League One club Barnsley.

Yates said: “I could go and get a group of 18-year-olds in but we are looking for players who will really add to us.

“We’ll bring in some more players over the next few weeks definitely.

“We just want wins - we’ve got a chance to make it eight out out of nine next week against a tough Notts County.

“They have good players and we got stuffed up at their place. And then we have to address our away form which has been pretty much the opposite of our home form!”
