Steyning cricket captain Ed Lamb praised bowler Sam Grant after their five wicket loss to Sussex Division 3 West leaders Middleton on Saturday.
An under-strength Steyning side was restricted to 208-5 and despite an unbeaten 65 from David Kennett, were unable to accelerate towards the end of the innings. Simon Burfiend added 41, but it was going to be a tall order to defend that total against a potent Middleton batting line-up.
Robert Maier scored 54 and Nikolai Smith an unbeaten 96 as Sam Grant (1-35) did not get the rewards his bowling deserved.
And while Lamb was delighted to have collected 12 points from the match, he saluted Grant’s efforts with the ball,
Lamb said: “Middleton always had it under control.
“We got 12 points and I would have settled for that before the game. There was no way we could have won with that side out.
“Sam had Maier playing a missing a lot, he could easily have had a five-for, hopefully he can continue bowling like that and get his rewards.”
