Stewart’s sublime seven wickets sees Henfield beat leaders Rye

They completed a rousing 148-run victory at home to the side that started the day leading the division.

Batting first after winning the toss, the hosts were reduced to 74-7, but Jack Parsons made an unbeaten 72 and put on an 80-run eighth-wicket partnership with William Culver (48), before George Stewart added 20 to see them declare on 209-9 in the 53rd over.

A match-winning display from the opening bowler then saw a previously unbeaten Rye collapse to just 61 all out in 22 overs. Stewart took 7-17 in seven overs, as Mugochi claimed 2-10.

Henfield skipper Adam Scott said: “Saturday was a great win for us against, top of the table, Rye and one we thoroughly deserved.

“Jack and Will batted beautifully together and with a cameo from George Stewart at the end they got us out of a tough situation to get us maximum batting points.

“George then bowled the best I’ve ever seen him bowl, but in a way we always knew he could. He bowled with control, pace, movement both ways off the pitch and in the air. He was pretty much unplayable. All of the first seven wickets to fall went to George and if it wasn’t for ECB regulations, meaning he can only bowl seven-over spells, I have no doubts he would have taken all 10, he was that good.”

“We still collapsed to 70-7 which is obviously worrying. But Jack and Wills partnership changed the momentum of the game and I hope it has given new confidence to the rest of the team.”
