Magic Michael is gr-eight as he strip away Middleton

The spinner claimed fantastic eight-wicket haul as his side clinched a four-wicket win over the division’s basement side.

It was just a second victory of the season for Horsham, who remain out of the bottom two only at the expense of the Sussex Development XI.

But Sam Attfield’s side will be buoyed by victory, especially by a solid batting display as Tom Johnson smashed an unbeaten 108, assisted by James Johnson’s 30 and Jamie Thornely’s 23 not out, as they chipped off Middleton’s 208-9 to notch 211-6 in 33 overs.

Attfield said: “It was much better. Any team is capable of anything at the moment, but what was nice was to play a team low down in the division, when you are struggling for form – it was a game that gives chances for everyone to show what they are about.”

And Munday did just that as he ripped through the Middleton order after they opted to bat. His haul from 19 overs also included that of opener Sean Heather (114) to leave them at 208-8.

Beck Hemmingway made 19 before being caught by Ben Shoare, who, in the process cut the webbing in his hand and the spinner played no further part in the game.

Attfield added: “We knew Mike was capable of it and it was a magnificent effort really to get eight wickets. Sean Heather batted really well and he was the key wicket.

“We had a game plan to get him off strike and the bowlers stuck at that task.

“We thought it was a very getable target on a very good wicket that was doing a bit early on, but it was a good Horsham wicket.

“Tom and James batted really well together, it probably helped Tom having his brother at the other end talking him through it. Tom batted brilliantly to score 100 off 50-odd balls. We knew he was capable of it and it shows he can get those type of scores. Hopefully he will continue that.

“It was his first league hundred, and the first is always the hardest to get, hopefully there will be more to come.

“James also batted very well. We all went in with confidence, but he showed his patience as well to finish it off.”

Horsham travel to Preston Nomads on Saturday, and Atffield added: “It is always hard to go to a place like Preston Nomads, but we have nothing to lose.”
