Horsham Cricket Festival hailed a big success

An estimated 7,000 people flocked to Horsham for last week’s County Cricket and those who went were treated to two scintillating matches.

Sussex first thrashed Somerset in the four-day game - turned into a two day game! - before edging to victory against Kent at Cricketfield Road on Sunday.

Organiser Barry Peay said: “We enjoyed a terrific week and every one from the Sussex CEO Zac Toumazi to the players and officials from both sides seem to as well.

“Lots of people from all around starved of cricket for two days came for the Sunday game where we probably had 4,500 alone. We enjoyed ourselves and hopefully showed again we are capable of putting on events like these.”

Mr Peay thanked all the volunteers who helped during the week and especially those in the popular ladies tea tent who worked at “overdrive”.

With Sussex beating Somerset in less than two days Mr Peay did admit that some revenue had been lost in gate numbers, but the large crowds on Sunday made up for it, he said.

Horsham CC are already gearing up for the next big event, the ICC Europe T20 Championships between July 8 and 12. Entrance will be free.
